Lorna's
Biography and Statement
Lorna Dall
was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She
completed a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Art Education. While
teaching in Victoria, Lorna was introduced to Watercolours by well known west
coast artist
Brian Travers Smith. Back in Calgary, she continued her studies in this
medium with Dick van den Hoogen, as well as teaching fine arts at a junior
secondary school.
Since her
return to Victoria in 1979, Lorna has continued her exploration of watercolour
techniques with an emphasis on close-up studies of nature.
Lorna held
her first solo exhibition in 1994. She was a founding member of an
artists' co-op, and has participated in many group shows and has been active
in several different art organizations.
In 1994, she
began a series of commissions to paint acrylic backdrops for the new model
displays in Miniature World in Victoria. She enjoys the challenge of
working in this medium. For her Watercolours, Lorna takes her
inspiration from the varied landscapes of Vancouver Island, from the mist
shrouded coastal trees to the weathered barns and fences further inland.
She also narrows her focus to the landscapes at her feet, the leaves,
rocks, mushrooms and stumps that are part of the greater picture.
I feel
truly blessed to be living in such a beautiful part of our world. The
variety of Vancouver Island, from seacoast to mountain, provides a
continually changing source of painting ideas.
My
realistic landscapes range from the panoramic view of a river valley to a
close-up of a leaf floating on a pond. I like the challenge of recreating
the texture found on the side of an old barn, capturing the mists that hang
over the trees on an autumn day, and painting the forest floor from the
perspective
of a mouse.
I see the
beauty around me and stand in awe. To be able to capture even a part of it
in watercolour, so that others may share in the wonder of it all, is my
goal.
